Growing a garden here is a major project. People enclose their gardens on all four sides plus top and bottom with mesh. One neighbor grows a garden in his enclosed patch. He did raise chickens. He had predators coming around - foxes, coyotes, bob cats, etc., etc. When a mountain lion started showing interest, he decided to get rid of the chickens.

I live about a mile from Fresno High in Old Fig Garden. Yes, I will probably need a fair amount of water but the barrels seem to keep the soil moist (a few inches below the surface).
I haven't had issues with predators in the past but lately I've had racoons eating the cat food. I'm not sure how they like veggies. I will probably get some caging material and put around the barrels, just in case.
