2) Hold Short means Hold Short. If a pilot is going to misinterpret a radio call he can also mistakenly misinterpret a computer signaling him to cross.

Sometimes controllers do make mistakes or rush a pilot into doing something he's not ready to do. Unless you're at an airport with a lot of student traffic a controller is usually going to assume you're familiar with the field. You may be a newly minted Private Pilot but the controller doesn't know that (though he might sense it in your radio calls). He's going to assume you know what you're doing and where you're going.
