First weekend of 914 ownership in the middle of Arkansas when the speed limit was 55... Passed a 1 mile long row of cars all in the right lane going 55. The 4th car in the line was Arkansas Highway Patrol. The alternator belt broke and was trying to get to Ft Smith before I had to turn the high watts headlights on. I passed him doing 110. My passenger waved at him as we went by. Got 2 miles ahead before i saw his lights come on.
Just kept going because it was dusk and I was 30 miles from Ft Smith. Missed the turn and got off on the next exit. Stopped crossing the bridge to get back on and go back to Ft Smith exit. Waited on the bridge because the 914 did not stick up above the solid bridge railing. Watched the hypo go by lights and sirens. Immediately went the other way and made it into Ft Smith.
It was a Sunday after dark in Arkansas. Figured we would have to make it a Porsche dealership the next morning. So got a motel room. Tried to call to let people know and ATT operators were on strike so no collect long distance. Found the sidewalks had been rolled up and no restaurants were open. Went to a grocery store and they would not sell us beer on as Sunday. Stopped at a Amaco gas station to get some cigs and were *****ing about our situation. The clerck overheard us and said he not only had a belt, but it was real easy to put on.
He put the belt on, we got out of paying for the room, and drove home. Were kind of antsy till we got into Oklahoma, and ate at a truck stop in OK just across the border.
When I got home the pumbing had sprung a leak and had to spend that Monday getting it fixed instead of going back to work.
Eventful end to first weekend with my first Porsche.
