Mostly I remember the loooong drives from Montgomery, AL to OKC at 55 MPH. I was a total broke cheapskate so I always drove straight through. The worst of the all was the week I moved to OKC. I had quit my job because he would not pay me 12 grand per year. I picked OKC since I had a free place to stay and free meals while looking for a job. I got up early, like 3:00 AM on Saturday, and drive the 900 miles in 16.5 hours to OKC likely pushing the limits to 65 MPH and got in fine. My 914 had no air conditioning, just sweat to cool me off.
I read through the Sunday paper in jobs wanted and on Monday morning July 3rd 1978 I went to the closest place. He handed me a color negative and showed me a darkroom with one enlarger and said go make an 8x10 print. The first test print came out very close to proper color so he said you can print. He handed me a roll of trash film and asked me to load the film on a reel. That was a cinch, and he said show up on Monday and I started at 12K per year. I went and found an apartment for $90 per month that was real close to my job. Paid first and last month rent, utility deposits and got the keys.
Tuesday was the 4th of July so I stuck around for the big pick-nick pig out, and left for Montgomery on Wednesday morning. 16.5 hours and rented a little 4x6 trailer, and hooked it to the tow hitch on my 914. I stuffed it full with my belongings. Headed to OKC on Friday morning. In 5th gear I could just get to 55 MPH with the pedal flat to the floor. To go faster I had to run in 4th gear. It was a 20 hour trip with one short nap on the side of the road.
I unloaded all my possessions and hauled them up the 14 steps to my crappy apartment in the 108 degree heat. Returned the trailer to U-haul, unpacked everything on Sunday.
I was at work on Monday morning. A total of 4 days of unemployment since the 4th was a holiday.
It was my longest week ever. I had less than 10 bucks left in my checking or savings account.
