We speculate the problem was within the switch. A new one is on the way. I had a very smart engineer buddy come over to help diagnose the wiring and our resident forum electrical expert Dennis was kind enough to speak on the phone with him to answer some questions. Electrical is certainly not my strong point other than a basic understanding.
After testing everything my buddy found a short in the blue/black wire that powers the lights in the ash tray, the heater sliders and the little defrost light on the floor between the seats.

Very thankful that did not damage anything other than the switch. Still haven't quite made peace with the $430 replacement switch cost! haha
