It sounds like you really just need a GPS. A cell phone relies of a decent signal, and does not have a map if you can't get reception. Most GPSs will let you mark a point of interest and it tracks your path.

It will depend on how deep (budget) you want to go with it. A laptop, with a good GPS connected and USGS maps downloaded at home would be great. I am sure there is a forum for it somewhere out there.

THe real mapping software gets spendy real fast. Global Mapper is a great program, but not super user friendly and not real cheap.
