The crest is 5" above the latch. I would think that pushing down at the lower point would not cause as much damage.
My 72 was a daily driver for 15 years. I had engine problems and no money, so I stored it in a storage unit for about 12 years. I knew if I sold it, I would never be able to buy another It's great driving now with so few people on the road!
