I installed my repaired oil temperature/pressure gauge today! What a roller coaster of emotions: there were two diodes between the temperature sender and the gauge when I pulled it and determined the coil needed to be replaced, so I thought I'd leave them in place. Wired with fuses between power for temperature and pressure, tested, no smoke or failures, removed fuses and connected final wires. THEN, smoke from behind the dashboard!!! AAAHHH!!! Horror!
But when I went to look for the source of the smoke, there were no singed wires to be found. Not even any signs of burning. So, I tested the gauge again, reinstalled everything WITHOUT the diodes (which aren't shown on any wiring diagram I've ever seen), started the car, and it worked! No smoke, and I'm getting both pressure AND temperature readings that make sense. And every electrical feature I have tried works.
Success? Close e-****ing-nough.
Also replaced fuel level sender and driver's side door speaker grill. Woo!
