A tidbit that I didn't realize from the article is that John had gone up in a Space Shuttle in 1998 when he was 77.

It bothered me that John was given Mission Specialist wings rather than Pilot wings for that mission. He DID pilot a Mercury spacecraft for NASA in 1962.
John regularly took the Astronaut physical fitness test yearly even after he left NASA to provide long term data on the bodies of people who went to space.
