My parents tried for years to get a pecan tree to grow in one spot in their yard. They planted many pecans for a few years, and got nothing. They bought a tree that was 6 feet tall, and it died. It is a full tree now producing pecans. Dad's theory was that it had to have squirrel spit on it to grow.

At our old home, we had pecans pop up all of the time. those things have a serious tap root. There was one that I must have cut off level with the ground 200 times, and every time it tried to grow back.
