Most larger metropolitan areas have a factory-to-you mattress company. Some, of course, are a sham but there are some that can make you a bespoke mattress for a decent price if you know what you're looking for.

For example, a Sleep Number mattress is an air bag. Pretty much what a waterbed used to be but all dolled up with layers of profit on top. There is a company in Orange Co, CA that will make you an air bag for the cost of an air bag. They can even wrap it up in some mattress covering so you can add your custom layers which they have.

Each SN mattress has a model number separated by about a grand each step up. One step is about a 12/" of cotton. Yeah, that's worth another grand.
