I designed the place myself, and made a number of decisions that added a lot of expense. The high ceilings were one, as was the 12 x 12 door, which required that that wall have 6-foot concrete heavily reinforced columns on either side of the door. The 6-inch slab was another, as was the 2 x 6 framing and the use of plywood instead of OSB for the roof deck. The rear storage room was another complexity, as it cut into a hillside and required a 7-foot high unopposed concrete wall that required a huge amount of extra rebar. At the end, I was peeling off $5K and $10K chunks of change right and left, but I don't regret building it this way.
For such a dog-simple structure, I was surprised how many consequential decisions had to be made.
