The later 911s used under-body sway bars. They are effective and relatively easy to manufacture. It is difficult to make them adjustable, and their roll resistance does not change in a linear fashion. (I forget the details, though.) I also find it to be a bit of a pain to install those, particularly if there is any pre-load in the front suspension.
The through-body type have better geometry and can be made adjustable. You can also use adjustable drop-links to zero out any pre-load.
I don't believe there is any functional difference between the 911 and 914 steering racks.
