I built a plastic printer almost 10 years ago. I used aluminum extrusion and plate when they were still using threaded rods. Now most are using extrusion for stiffness. Upgrading mine now to use some of the newer filaments. Prices are way down, like computers it doesn't pay to roll your own anymore.
Cost per cut isn't cheap with the water jet. I guess to keep the price of hardware down, this one does not recycle the media.
I'm tempted to pick up one of the k40 lasers (around $400) and hack the software/controller.
