I seem to have wrangled myself into becoming an "expert" in what is called remote handling. Basically handling and replacement of highly radioactive stuff that can't be done hands-on. I am currently reviewing a paper for a nuclear journal and travel all over the world supporting reviews for other facilities, etc.
Having said that, an "expert" to me doesn't mean someone who knows everything. The more I learn, the more I realize (and fully admit) that I don't know. That makes it easy to review other facilities and other systems. I don't go in with the attitude "I know everything and you need to listen to me". I go in with "I have a lot of hard-won experience and I am here to help you be successful in a way that suits your facility".
