ah - turns out nope - in the 1800s NYC harbor had lots and lots of oysters - some a foot long - but France had depleter their oyster beds, so we sent oysters over to France on sailing ships

they will last many days in their shells - it's why they have shell, right? they live in the inter-tidal zone and get exposed to no water every day

Texas has a gulf coast and plenty of oyster - obviously not as good as going to Louisiana for oysters
