My personal stable is more exotic than what I suggested, but none of the bikes are quiver killers. And I shop private seller used. My favorite bike currently is a Serotta Ottrott, but they are long out of production and were custom so you have to shop hard. The closest modern equivalent is a Seven 622, and the Ottrott is in some ways more exotic. It would be a $10k bike in today's world.
The current crop of "endurance"performance road bikes are very capable, responsive bikes with a slightly higher head tube ( better for aging necks and backs).
