Only 1st and 2nd gear due to loose bar in shift coupler

During my last run, all of a sudden (luckily close to home) I couldn't shift into 3rd anymore. I limped home in 2nd as I couldn't select 3rd / 4th gear and the shifter didn't even move into the 5-R plane.
I checked the obvious coupler + shifter housing.

Seems the bar in the coupler came loose and was hanging to one side I suspect this to be the cause for it not shifting into 3-4-5-R.

What have I done:
I removed the coupler, cleaned and checked bushings + reinstalled => All good
I checked the shifter housing and it is moving freely if the coupler is disconnected => All good

Next seems to be something in the gearbox which could have been disconnected/damaged and prevents shifting into 3-4-5R

As I don't want to drop the engine / trans again (already did it twice in the last 6 months) ...
Any thoughts on what could cause this?
Do I drain transmission to check shift fork below?
Any other thoughts?
