They understand just fine Shaun, they are just being difficult as sport.
If someone is at high risk, an N95 makes perfect sense, also staying home and avoiding other people like the Chinese plague. If they *must go out in public, just slip a cloth or surgical mask over the N95 and you are golden. This protects yourself and others. It's not rocket science.
At this point the anti-mask folk don't want to hear data or see visualizations. It's all about emotion and they feel like they are being mask-raped when asked to wear one in enclosed public spaces. I especially liked the the little lady who refused to wear a mask, refused to leave Costco, laid down on the ground and had a 2 yr old temper tantrum while berating the employees. Classy!
It's still a free country so if you are emotionally challenged by wearing one, you are free to go without. Either stay home or avoid crowds and enclosed public spaces. A retail store is also free to refuse entry to those who choose to exercise their freedom not to wear a mask. "No shoes, no shirt, no mask, no service." Freedom is awesome and it works both ways.
