I have heard the biggest bang for the buck, is the madza rotary conversion from the vw aircooled powerplant. The rotary engines can be had very cheaply, and can produce as much as 700 hp in the 3 rotor design. standard 12a thru 13b motors put out as much as 185 HP in non turbo designs. With the adapter plate, they bolt right up to the porsche 914, or VW transmissions. And are extremeley fast! I already have my motor, I'm just looking for the transmission, and I heard there are special plates that have to be welded in to mount the 914 tranny to.
And the neat thing is it all fits in the same space, but is liquid cooled. And routing the tubing really isn't that hard.
