I use 3M adhesive remover. If it's a hard, dried glue, I'll sometimes soften it up with a citrus-based paint remover like Citristrip. Note that I'm careful to not get any stripper on the paint, just the glue.

As for what to put it back with, it depends on the trim. In some cases a two-sided tape is OK, other times an adhesive is good.... hard to say without knowing more about the shape of that particular trim piece. 3M makes a bunch of both.
