Red face Didn't know this could go wrong .. brake pedal fell off

Wow .. didn't even think this could happen. I parked my 83 na and noticed that my brake lights were on. Upon further inspection it seems like the brake light switch was not being turned off by the return of the pedal. For those that don't know when u depress your brake pedal there is a switch that is no longer pressed down that causes your brake lights to go on.... foot off the brake, spring pulls it back up and switch is pushed down turning lights off. Anyways, I reached down to see if switch was messed up etc .. and I pulled on the brake pedal which in turn fell off. It seems that the clutch and brake pedals share the same axis ... a bar that travels through the clutch pedal arm, through the brake pedal where it seems to terminate in a cap that is welded onto the brake pedal arm. Now i pushed the brake pedal arm back on the axis and I can now actuate the brakes but two problems:
1. there is some lateral play in the pedal (feels very wobbly), affraid if i step on it quickly i wmight knock it off the pivot rod again, and
2. the brake lights stay on .... maybe the spring needs replacing as well.

Is there a way that the brake pedal arm "locks" into place? I didn't see any pins / connectors / fasoners on the floor that might have fallen off.

Thanx in advance .... dont like driving it as it feels just a bit unsafe right now (duh)
