Something is leaking somewhere. Take the tank down & have it cleaned & pressure checked (or do it yourself). As I recall, the tank hanger bolts (2) have a series of spacers/insulators to mount properly & they're always boogered up and/or installed wrong. Replace the dust shield, tank to inner fender well, replace the sending unit gasket, then route the wiring properly.
Shouldn't cost much for spacer/insulators and a gasket.
