Back when I was kid and the world was a different place, we rode our bikes everywhere. No cell phones, and no one knew where we were. We lived on base so it was a pretty safe place to be. The adults knew there was a thunderstorm coming, and the base closed the golf course. That just meant we had the cart paths to explore and have fun on.

We saw a heavy cell of rain approaching sow 4 boys all piled into the rain shelter the course put in for golfers. Out bikes were getting wet, but that was not new. It was a shelter open on the sides, much like a bus stop, with a 8 foot wide roof and a concrete bench.

All of s sudden all the hair on or heads and arms stood on end, and there was a truly deafening booooom and blinding light all at the same time. The lightning rod on top of our shelter had been hit. The lightning had struck an object just a few feet from our heads. The lightning rod was melted. We were all stunned, and virtually deaf. We were shouting to each other, and like idiots jumped on our bikes and pedaled our butts home. We all agreed to not tell the parents at all. Our hearing came back slowly but fully.

I do not want to ever bee remotely as close to lightning as that day.
