We all know that if you're not careful on Pelican, you end up spending money.
I'm only 3 months into 911 driving and I've been putting off assembling a proper travel kit. (tools, spares, etc) My old road trip tool bag has seen better days. *It's 15+ years old and has clocked tens of thousands of miles, dozens of roadside repairs, dozens of boneyard trips, and generally put up with a lot of abuse.
Off to Amazon I go, shopping for some necessities I don't have. I picked up a can of fix-a-flat, two new tool bags (small & medium), a spare fan belt, some coupler nuts (project yet to be started), and a voltmeter that plugs into the cig lighter and charges my iPhone. Nothing super fancy, but stuff I figure I ought to have before I embark on such a journey.

Michael O'Neal put together a very comprehensive list in this thread http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/945924-what-your-absolute-essential-tools-long-road-trips.html that I'm going to cherry-pick from and attempt to assemble my own kit. The end-goal is to have 2-3 small bags with everything I need for 911 cannonballing. Easy to tuck into the car, but not rattle or move about. Also, easy to pull out for auto-x or repairs without scattering tools/supplies.

I may yet venture over to Harbor Freight for some cheap wrenches or sockets so I can have a dedicated car set without opening a drawer on my tool chest. If I opt to sack the chest, I'll just have to be sure to put stuff back when I return and then buy dedicated tools later.

Here's the list of flotsam and jetsam I plan to pack. If you see something wholly wrong, don't hesitate to LMK.

- fire extinguisher
- flashlight
- oil (1-2qts)
- jumper cables
- fan belt
- yoga mat (you never know when you need to bust out a pigeon pose)
- floor jack (low-profile aluminum scissor)
- tire plug kit
- fix-a-flat
- compressor
- lug wrench (extending that uses 1/2" sockets)
- 24mm socket for fan/alt pulley
- fan pulley wrench
- fancy 18-in-1 screwdriver (flat, phillips, torx, 8mm socket)
- multimeter
- vise grips
- diagonal cutters
- wiring pliers (strip/cut/crimp...it's one pair. IDK what they're properly called.)
- fuses
- duct, electrical, & silicone tapes
- zip ties
- razors
- paper towels/shop rags
- work & nitrile gloves
- lighter
- magnet-on-a-stick
- 2-3' of wire
- channel locks
- allen keys (Although, the more I think about it, IDK that I have anywhere that I've used them on the whole car. I'm not likely to change rocker seals on the side of the highway...)
- sockets 8-19mm
- extensions for sockets
- ratchet(s)
- combination wrenches 8-19mm
- laptop

That's all I've got for now. Eventually, I'll add a clutch cable and possibly a tow strap to the list. But this has already gotten way out of hand. Need to see how compactly I can pack all this crap up, and then start making cuts. I do not intend to become a mobile-mechanic. I just don't want to pay for a flat-bed. (Yes I have AAA and I have Hagerty, each with 100miles of towing, and a cell phone.)

What say you, Pelican Brain-Trust? Have I gone too far? Missed the plot completely?
I might have missed it, but here are a few more:
- HAMMER (big...cut handle down if space needed ..the more your car is still a "project", the bigger a hammer)
- Punch (various reasons, such as making emergency holes in tin to mount emergency fuel pump (etc), also, to drive out a rounded bolt or nut
- also, make sure your pocket knife has a can opener, bottle opener, AND CORKSCREW.
- Might also consider one or 2 ratchet straps (just one example, to hold the doors closed, or strapping a great roadside find, like a rust free fender)
- along those same lines, bungee cords
- on a smaller dimension than rope, bring string...at least for front engine cars, I once used a string to operate the throttle with a string from carb to cabin when the throttle cable broke, but many other uses that wire would not be as useful
