Another vote for some corrosion inhibitor and then leave it be.
I have a similar story involving my first car. I owned it for over a decade before realizing, despite the evidence, that the driver's rear quarter was replaced. It bugged me for a bit, but it doesn't hurt my enjoyment of the car. I still own it.
