I had a 1980 VW Rabbit (Golf) Diesel. non turbo. Pitifully slow.

Lots of gas stations didnt have diesel fuel. Almost all of them do now.

On another note, I recently saw a newer Chevy SS driving around that had been re-badged as a Holden. pretty cool
Diesel cars were just taking off in the U.S. ten years ago and then the VW scandal happened and sort of deep-sixed the whole market segment. That and general emission standards that phased them out. It was a short romance.
