My 76 Carrera 3.0 Targa is same color, was in same shape when I bought it and know exactly what you are after. However, I don't have advice how to achieve your goal. I wish I'd kept the hood as I got it ... paint peeled off the galvanizing just as your is. Luckily, no rust had formed. I then had the the hood and deck lid re-sprayed. Until I can find the right formula for the original silver metallic, I'll spot repair, prime, get it close, leave rest as is.
