I remember on my trip out of San Diego I had the great fun of driving through real garden spots like El Centro, and other less desirable parts of California along I-8.
I remember stopping for breakfast and getting in my 911 with a full tummy, and thinking enjoy the nice weather for a few more minutes, it is gonna suck for many hours. I had to keep turning up the AC speed and the temperature down.
Still in my book the worst place in California is Boron. It makes Bakersfield look really nice and upscale, and that is no exaggeration. I made a pee stop in Boron, and there was NOTHING but brown dirt and dust in the wind, and every semi in California much go through there. I have never seen so many 18 wheelers, and miles and miles of nothing to see.
