I have just vague memories of Death Valley days on TV. Yea, the Borax mines are the only reason that place exists.
We drove through some of the deserts of Utah, and there are long stretches of road where there is nothing growing, or ever grew. It looks like the lunar photos. It was kinda pretty as long as we were in a comfortable air conditioned car and had our ice chest of water bottles in the car. I asked a state trooper why in the world they had fences along the highway as there was nothing living for hundreds of miles. He said it was to tell if someone drove off the road and went through they would know where to look for the bodies.
