It's fascinating stuff. The early reports of the salutary effects of vegetarianism failed to compare similar populations. In this country, vegetarians tend to be better educated, more affluent, exercise more, rarely smoke, drink less and in general have an overall healthier lifestyle. In the few studies that have used population balanced controls, death rates of meat eaters and vegetarians are quite similar.
The last review article I read suggested that a vegetarian diet may
possibly add 1 year or so to your life expectancy. The way I look at it, what the heck? It's the last year anyway. What's for dinner?
