I assumed the following:

Maximize Blue Highways, SUV, get a taste of the Southwest then book home once you hits the pine trees.

Get out of LA on I10. Get to 29 Palms. It get a little tricky, but I have done this route a dozen times during flight test headed back to China Lake:

Take a left on Adobe Road in 29 Stumps then take a right on Amboy Road to Amboy. Not a bad road, not great but incredibly scenic. You'll have cell the whole way.

Take a right on Route 66 to I40.

Take I40 the Cal-Ari Drive exit near the Chrysler and Ford Proving Grounds.

You will be on dirt for a while. Nothing serious, just dirt roads. Take a quick right on Alamo Road, which turns into Rt 15. You'll have cell and GPS so navigation isn't hard. There will also be little ranchettes the entire way.

Stay on 15 to Chicken Springs Road, Rt 131. Take a left. You are headed to Wikieup, AZ and pavement.

Make sure you check with California and Arizona road information. I have driven the route I just wrote about three times and never had an issue. There is a small mountain pass involved and great views. I have pics.

From Wikieup, head south on 93. Take a left on 96 to Prescott. Great road.

Take a left onto Iron Springs Road at the Kirkland Bar and Steakhouse well before Prescott. I have not eaten there.

Iron Springs takes you above Prescott. Find 89A to Jerome, AZ. Amazing road.

I am very partial to Rt 260 leaving Jerome after Cottonwood.

Take 260 all the way to Showlow, AZ.

Then take Rt 60 all the way to Socorro, NM. My favorite drive.

After that, find back roads to Cache, OK and drive through the Wichita Mountains then head home.

To me, that is a great sample of the Southwest. I have driven every mile, multiple times, of the route I just described and would do it again tomorrow.
what is the exit from 40 to Alamo Road. Was going to do it Monday, but was not sure about the exit and did not find gas to top up before the run to Wikeup
