There are some pretty notorious stories out of the northeast about how they treat gun owners.

I seem to recall a few convictions got overturned in New Jersey because state police were directing vehicles off the interstate for a "safety inspection". Thing is, they were only picking off vehicles with out of state plates going northbound in the fall that looked like they might be headed to Maine for some hunting. They'd direct the vehicle into a school parking lot for the "safety inspection" where some probably cause would be generated for a vehicle search. Of course they would turn up unloaded hunting rifles in locked cases in accordance with federal safe passage laws. These would be ignored and the vehicle occupants would be arrested on the spot and charged with a felony for taking a gun onto school grounds.

In another NJ case, a history professor was given something like 30 years for having an antique flintlock pistol in his vehicle (not even legally considered a firearm) when he volunteered the information during a traffic stop.

I hear Maryland isn't much better.
