No maybe about it on the transaxle. S2 / 951 / 951S all an upgrade over the 944 stuff. 951S being the best of the bunch.
Suspension wise if the 944 is an early car with the hollow front drivers side spindle, that is potential weak spot.
But overall the 944 suspension is fairly robust. Lots of changes between control arms, trailing arms, hubs, spindles, shocks, and sway bars over the years, so you can pick and chose based on the goal of the build.
