I suspect "it's a driver" is not an insult 99.9% of the time. Lots of folks love drivers. I'm don't think I've ever called a car a driver, but when I see something that gets driven, it make me smile/happy.
I think you should just talk to the guy as if he was a car guy. If he continues to rub you the wrong way, find a way to disengage. But I definitely wouldn't let it bother me.
