Our daughter started at a young age playing by ear. We had her take lessons so she would learn proper technique. She still plays by ear a lot.
I have a hard time reading music and I played trombone in band for years. Also learned treble clef for guitar several times as I taught lessons. Still can't read it very well. Can't do tabs very well either. If i can't learn by ear, YouTube is my friend.
