Cool story SCadaddle. With the quality of some bridge construction I think "they" are using zip ties now days. One bridge on a local turnpike did not last 10 years before it was so uneven as to be dangerous to semis. The expansion joints were much lower in elevation than the bridge deck. I used that bridge to help settle and exercise the suspension on my 911 after I replaced all the rubber in the suspension. It is a interstate level road, and they had to rip down the entire deck and only the supports were salvageable.
