IMO
the greatest to call an NHL game. He wasn't a 'homer', called the games quickly, gave personal insight, knew the history of the players and best of all, he put his personality into it. He'd be closing out the play for a commercial break and make a comment like "isn't this a great game?".
It made you feel like he was sitting next to you and talking to you instead of just reporting at you.
My wife and I would watch a game and listen for "doc-isms" like if play stopped and there was pushing and shoving he would say something like "the whistle has blown and now we've got a little extra" or "we're having a meeting of the minds". Invariably, in every game he'd talked about food. We'd laugh because we figured he was hinting for someone to bring him whatever he was talking about (usually local food). There is a sandwich named after him. No one was ever like Doc
