BMW currently uses a small (2 cyl? m/c) engine run on an Atkinson cycle as a range extender. You could also use an engine running on H or CH4, and eventually maybe a fuel cell.
OTOH, EV batteries might progress quickly enough to obviate a range extender.
For an off-road EV you do NOT want to get stuck in the outback due to drained batteries.
