My grandfather used to wait for a windless day, and burn off his grass every spring. It would green up quickly, and then he kept it like a putting green. I saw him get up from chair in front of the TV to go pick up a leaf that had blown onto his yard.
Burning off lawns is frowned upon now, especially in a standard residential neighborhood.
