Thanks for your suggestion. I was just reading the CDS section of the Haynes manual. It suggests that there needs to be a current path to avoid the coil arcing internally. Fortunately it does suggest how to do it - support the distributor end of the HT wire close to a ground to allow it to arc across

Sounds like a plan...!
