Throttle linkage

Hey. At some point while attempting to start my 1970 911 to set the timing and balance the carbs my throttle linkage has not returned to it's original position. By this I mean the throttle pedal should be further back. At the carbs end the linkage is now 1/2 inch lower than what it was, I would have to push it up to get the cup back onto the ball joint. This means that if I connect it the revs will be too high and the screw stop unable to effect any change. Hope you follow?!! I've checked for any snags in the tunnel or bent parts but can't see anything. I'm reluctant to start adjusting all the linkage because it was fine previously and there may be a simple answer. Anybody had a similar issue that can offer advice? Thanks
