For the doorbell I do what the dog whisperer Cesar does. I "claim" the doorway area. The dogs are not allowed within 6 feet of the door. They submit quickly, and I open the door.
One thing I felt was very important was they know the open fence gate in the back yard is for humans ONLY, and the are not allowed past that threshold without a leash. We spent three days hauling limbs to the curb in the front yard. I even opened the double wide gate to make it easier to haul limbs out. We could walk through, and go to the curb, and they never put a foot past the fence line. And the gate stayed open for over an hour and they knew, the fence was the barrier even when the gate is open.
