Geezer voice: Back in the good old days, I could go to my local import parts store. Ernie would ask what I need, and walk back to the shelves and be back in seconds with what I needed. He would then say this is part number whatever, and the updated version for your old part number whatever.
If he did not have it in stock, he would order it and have it in within a short time. People walked in all the time and handed him a fretszler bearing from a whatever and he would rattle off the part number and tell them I have two of them, or sorry, all out, but I will get it in three days.
End Geezer voice.
He was amazing storehouse of wisdom and knew where each part went on each shelf long before the computers came along.
