The backfire may be caused by one of the following: Lean mixture.
Leaky or sticking intake valve or
a weak or broken intake valve
spring.
Bad distributor cap.
Intermittent short circuit in
primary or a short circuit in
the coil or in secondary wire
from coil to distributor. (Any of
these will cause a loud muffler
explosion.)
