915 differential bearing preload problem
I have replaced the FAG carrier bearings in my friends '79 915. When I try to measure the preload with my pointer type torque wrench the bearings don't turn evenly ie. it feels like bump, bump bump with every roller and the needle of my wrench swings about 10 in./lb.s. with each bump. Bearings were installed completely dry - should they have a little lube? Reading (near as I can tell) is in the right range of 50 in./lb.s. Is this jerky reading normal? What would cause the unevenness? There are many threads on differential preload but I did not see this unevenness addressed.
