Just make a deal, you'll take an old cat off their hands and they'll take the old cat back when you need to go a shelter yerself.. it's a win win win
cat wins , he 's out of his cage
you win, you have a pet
cattery wins, they have one cat less to care for

I am caregiver for an aunt of 84 with alzheimer, her biggest problem is lack of company.
her son doesn't want to get a cat from the cattery.. and he doesn't even visit her that much.

It's a terrible thing to be geriatric and truly alone once the partner dies.

Her son bought her a robot dog. I'm telling you, it's sad to watch.
She could have had a cat for the last 3 years.. and old one, from the shelter.
Actually, that's a good idea...an older cat...but not going to happen here. All the toys, cat tree, litter pans, and food have already left the place...Cindy says "no more grief from losing a pet"...and pretty obvious she means it judging by how rapidly any and all reminders left here.

We'll still be making our usual donations to the local no kill shelter we support.
