I know what you mean. In a class of 52 we lost 2, and 2 permanently disabled. I didn't care much about the folks I went to school with, but the guys on the sports teams with me were different. We had a shared experience, even without a bond. When I went to the memorial in Washington I made a point of looking up their names. Brought back a lot of experiences. Hard to believe they were gone before they had a chance to live.
