I believe that Garlits tried the first canopy on a top fuel car, ran one for a while then abandoned the idea. He was very much the Innovator. One of the most memorable was placing the ( rear engine dragster) engine sideways so the crankshaft rotation would be in the direction of acceleration, like a motorcycle. Power had reached a point where the engine's rotational torque was a real issue unloading the left tire.
