You only have an issue when you stop. I've driven to an underpass (or stop sign) and then put the top up. In a miata, you can do that from the driver's seat even with the manual top. I've also been caught once or twice in the boxster. That's even easier since it's power and I think you can put the top up at speeds up to 20 mph or something like that (although I'm not going to try it at that speed).
